1KB4K (One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten)

"1KB4K" stands for "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten." Preschoolers check out specially-designed backpacks filled with ten preschool-level books, take them home, and then someone at home - a parent, grandparent, or sibling, for instance - reads them each book. We keep track of which bags children check out and the kids get a prize at specific intervals. After 100 bags are completed (1,000 books!), an article will be published in the Calhoun County Journal-Herald about your child's accomplishment, with a photo of them holding their trophy for a job well done. If you have questions about the 1KB4K program, or you would like to donate gently used preschool-level books, please contact our preschool teachers.

FAQs

Q:  How do I sign up?

A:  If your child is enrolled in MNW Preschool, you can sign up at open house in the fall or speak to one of the preschool teachers.

Q:  How old must my child be to participate?

A:  The only age limitation is that children cannot yet be in TK or kindergarten.

Q:  What if we lose or destroy a book?

A:  You are expected to replace it by the end of the school year. You can do so by buying the same title (used books in like new or very good condition are acceptable). If an entire book is lost, replacement cost for the bag and books is $50.

Q:  Can we substitute a book?

A:  You can always read a book of your own instead, but we do encourage you to read the books we've selected. You can also read a book in myON, our school's ebook platform. We have a special 1KB4K collection for you to choose from.
